Essential oils are the secondary metabolites from plants, which are concentrated, hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. Essential oils are also known as volatile, ethereal oils or aetherolea. Interest in essential oils has revived in recent decades with the popularity of aromatherapy, a branch of alternative medicine which claims that the specific aromas carried by essential oils have curative effects. Geranium essential oil has a balancing effect on the nervous system, and considered an ideal oil for maintaining homeostasis of the body, so very useful for treating woman’s problems such as PMS, menopausal problems with massage. Geraniol has a rose-like odor and is commonly used in perfumes and fruit flavors as one of the main compound in geranium. Geraniol is a monoterpenoid alcohol which is considered or be the most beneficial molecules, yet exhibit zero orxicity, also used in skin care. To develop of guideline of geranium, chemical analysis of geraniol in geranium was conducted by GC and GC/MS spectrometric analysis. GC/MS is a method that combines the features of gas-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry or identify different substances within test samples which are bought randomly. As results, the content and range of geraniol in 9 geranium samples was 7.5~17.9%, and average was 12.3%. Large amounts of geraniol in geranium can ultimately provide a quality and convenient source for aromatherapy.
