The Picture of Dorian Gray has gained great popularity in England since the late 19th century. As a writer, Oscar Wilde reflected his own agony and anguish about life and art in his novel. Considering that a perfect life could be lived with sensation and pleasure, he led the hedonistic life all through his life so that he was taken to jail on a charge of homosexual love which was forbidden in England. It is no doubt that his aestheticism and hedonism were deeply concerned with his biographical features. Dorian Gray-one of the main characters in this novel-wished that he would sell his soul if he could maintain his physical beauty. For no particular reason, his wish was realized, so that he could keep his physical beauty as he grew old. However, he got shocked as he noticed that the picture of him turns slowly corrupted and ugly by losing his first innocence due to a series of his wicked behaviors or crimes. The alteration in Gray's features in the picture may be regarded as the process of disruption and crack of the perfect identity-an identity in a complete harmony between the gey and the spirit. Therefore, the aim of this essay is to examine the change in Dorian Gray's identity which swings from disruption to integration between the body and the spirit.
