In Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, anxiety from inevitable dichotomy value, which is a dominant thought that human beings are split in mind and body in the culture of the 19th century, is revealed through Dorian Gray’s pursuit of aesthetic pleasure. Dorian’s extreme pursuit for beauty, mind and virtue deprives his body of his own identity, causing his own anxiety. I focus on the loss of body to search the effect of the 19th century Victorian social value on individuals and to extend the scope of question of human body in the culture beyond homosexuality. Loss of body, following the loss of time and Dorian’s anxiety arising on surface on his portrait are engaged with one another as a circle. Dorian’s loss of time, which is caused by loss of body, leads to Narcissism Self and Ideal Ego which result from his excessively internalizing social and culture demands during the 19th century. Paralyzing body and sentiment and also depriving him of time, Narcissism means Dorian’s psychological death as Subject of Desire. Such loss of time is represented into his eternal youth. I try to catch alienation and separation of Subject through Jacques Lacan and Gilles Deleuze, which throw questions of human body out of our culture. I think Oscar Wilde also asks questions about body alienated in studying human nature through Dorian’s anxiety.
