Translation is a social behavior. Therefore, it is not free from social norms. Social norms have several features. First, the norms decide the member's status of a social community. These features control the members' speech act which. is called politeness. A norm of politeness is a kind of reflection of the members' status relation of a social community. Second, it is changed by various factors, including time, space, and the members. I tried to observe the change of women's social status through Korean translations of English novels and woman character's speech act in Japanese translations. I observed four translations: two Korean translations published in 1963 and in 2001, and two Japanese translations: one published in 1963 and 'The catcher in the rye' published in 2006. In the observation, I paid special attention to the time and space factors. As a result of my observation, I found a change in the speech act of male and female characters. It is inferred that the reason for the changes is that an increasing number of women get a higher education and are involved in economic activities. Consequently, it seems that such a trend has enhanced women's social status and has brought the social status of men and women closer.
