The purpose of this study is to investigate to what extent Korean college students use correct English in performing text-based English chatting communicative tasks and to analyze error patterns and corrective feedback interaction in the text-based chat scripts. The data of the study are 72 individual chat scripts and 18 group chat scripts produced by 12 female college students in Korea who performed six different text-based communicative tasks. The major findings of the study are as follows: First, the average mean of error rate of the text-based chat scripts is 48.30%, which indicates that almost half of the chat scripts are full of errors. This can be attributed to students paying primary attention to meaning while paying little attention to form. Second, the error analysis of the chat scripts reveals that 86.8% of surface errors occur in the areas of omission and misinformation, and 41.8% of linguistic errors are centered in the areas of improper lexical use, incorrect English expressions, and incomplete sentences. Third, the average number of error corrective movements is 0.56 per task and the corrective movements are triggered by orthographic, lexical, morphosyntactic, and semantic errors. It is also observed that local errors such as spelling and grammar tend to be corrected by means of self-correction, while global errors such as lexical choice and content tend to be corrected by means of peer-correction or form-focused interaction. Based on these findings, some pedagogical suggestions are made on effective ways of enhancing the accuracy of Korean EFL learners' English.
