The purpose of this study was to develop and test an on-line approach to collaborative biology concept mapping using information communications technology (ICT). The on-line collaborative biology concept mapping procedure used concept mapping software (Inspiration 6.0b, Inspiration Software, Inc.) and communication software (Windows NetMeeting 3.01, Microsoft Corporation) on personal computers using the Microsoft Windows XP operating system. To examine the effectiveness of the on-line collaborative concept mapping procedure, four eleventh grade classes (88 boys and 42 girls) in Gyeonggi province, Korea were used. Classes was taught the same ten biology lessons using one of four approaches: traditional teacher lecture, on-line individual concept mapping, on-line collaborative concept mapping, and traditional teacher lecture plus on-line collaborative concept mapping, and then tested on the subject.ANCOVA detected differences in adjusted mean scores between the four groups. The traditional teacher lecture plus on-line collaborative concept mapping group score (12.52) was significantly higher (p=0.006) than the traditional teacher lecture group score (9.53) and higher (p=0.048) the on-line individual concept mapping group score (10.15) The on-line collaborative concept mapping group score (12.00) was significantly higher (p=0.039) than the traditional teacher lecture group score, but was not higher than the on-line individual concept mapping group score (p=0.195). The on-line individual concept mapping group score was not significantly higher than the traditional teacher lecture group score (p=0.902). The results indicate the potential effectiveness of ICT and teacher based collaborative concept mapping in biology.
