Gemella 속은 항온동물의 점막에 상재하는 그람양성구균으로 염색과정에서 쉽게 탈색되고, 그 형태도 다양하게 나타나 정확한 동정이 어려운 경우가 많다. 이러한 Gemella 속은 16S rRNA 유전자 염기서열 분석으로 정확한 동정 및 분류가 가능하다. 임상 미생물 검사실에서는 동정이 되지 않는 심내막염의 원인균을 경험하였으며 빠르고 정확한 동정을 통해 실제 환자치료에 정보를 제공할 목적으로 16S rRNA 유전자 염기서열 분석을 실시하여 BLAST 검색을 통해 GenBank 데이터 베이스와 비교하였다. 두 균주 모두 Gemella morbillorum의 16S rRNA 유전자 염기서열과 99% 이상의 유사도를 보였으며, Gemella morbillorum을 동정할 수 있었다. 이 결과를 바탕으로 임상에서 환자를 성공적으로 치료할 수 있었다.
