심실세동 등에 의한 심정지가 있었거나 구조적인 심장질환에 동반된 심실빈맥이 있는 환자는 이후 돌연사가 발생할 가능성이 높은 것으로 알려져 있으며 이들에게 항부정맥제 치료만으로는 예방 효과가 부족하여 삽입형 제세동기(implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, ICD)를 삽입하는 것이 권고되고 있다[1]. 이러한 이차적 예방을 위한 ICD 삽입 외에 최근에는 심기능이 저하된 심부전 환자에서의 일차적 예방을 위한 ICD 삽입도 증가하고 있다. 이외에 적절한 약물 치료에도 불구하고 심부전증상이 지속되는 환자들을 대상으로 하여 심기능과 생존율을 증가시키기 위해 시행하는 심장재동기화 치료(cardiac resynchronization therapy, CRT) 또한 최근 활발히 시행되고 있다.
