Kim, E.J. Relation of cardiopulmonary function to imflammatory markers in healthy men. Exercise Science. 17(2): 261-267, 2008. Inflammation plays an important role in the development of cardiovascular disease, but the relationships with cardiopulmonary function are not well known in Korean man. We examined the relationships between cardiopulmonary function and inflammatory markers in healthy men. Cross-sectional analyses were conducted on 2833 healthy male adults (mean 489years). We evaluated the association between the markers of inflammation high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hS-CRP), fibrinogen, white blood cell count (WBC), and albumin - and cardiopulmonary function, objectively measured by cardiopulmonary exercise test with expired gas analysis. Pearson's correlation analysis showed that cardiopulmonary function was significantly associated with hS-CRP (r=-.16, p<.001), fibrinogen (r=-.23, p<.001), albumin (r=.13, p<.001), and WBC (r=-.12, p<.001). In stepwise multiple regression analysis, cardiopulmonary function (p<.001) and HDL-C (p=.004) are independent predictors of hS-CRP. When grouped into quartiles according to increasing cardiopulmonary function, levels of hS-CRP, fibrinogen, and WBC decrease across quartiles of cardiopulmonary function (each p<.001). Albumin increased across quartiles of cardiopulmonary function (p<.001). In summary, cardiopulmonary function is independently association with inflammatory markers in healthy Korean men. These data suggest that high levels of cardiopulmonary function are associated with favorable effects on inflammatory markers, which may contribute to lower incidence of cardiovascular diseases seen in higher fit individuals.
