Social capital, defined as those features of social structures including levels of interpersonal trust and norms of reciprocity, levels of trust within a social structure and information channels and mutual aid which function as resources for individuals can facilitate collective actions. Social capital may affect the individual process of acquisition of relevant information in that it promotes more rapid diffusion of information by exerting social control over behaviors associated with deviance. Using data obtained from a survey sample of people 65 years of age and older living in Seoul and Chuncheon, Korea, this paper empirically assesses whether the level of social capital of the elderly influences their health-related behaviors. As an econometric model, a simultaneous equation model and the 2SLS method were employed to control the endogeneity problem of social capital of the elderly. The estimation results provided herein indicate that the elderly level of social capital influences individual smoking and drinking behaviors. With all three different cases of social capital being applied, the levels of social capital were demonstrated to exert a statistically significant negative effect on individual smoking and drinking behaviors.
