The purpose of this study is to determine whether Korean high school textbooks are authentic in terms of the use of tense and aspect. Textbooks are a major input material for learning foreign languages in school settings. Consequently, for effective learning it is extremely important to provide learners with textbooks that authentically reflect the actual use of a target language. Thus, in this study, we examined Korean English textbooks for their authenticity, focusing on tense and aspect. The frequencies of tense and aspect in Korean high school textbooks were calculated and compared with those of a corpus of current American English, Ame06. Six Korean textbooks with the largest circulation were selected for comparison. First, overall frequencies of (the present and past) tenses and (progressive, perfect, and perfect progressive) aspects were compared. Then, the texts were classified into two categories depending on their types of writing—prose and fiction—and their frequencies of tense and aspect use were compared with those in the same genres in Ame06. The results showed that Korean high school English textbooks adequately reflect the tense and aspect use of native speakers of English in terms of frequency.
