In this paper, I discuss jizukushi, which is a play on words which repeats the same character in Japanese comedic stories. The Western nursery song “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” provides a good example to explain this term. We can see that the word “merrily” is repeated four times in this song. The Korean version of this song also has a number of words ending in -ri: kkoekkori (nightingale), moksori (voice), kaenari (forsythia), ult’ari (fence), ori (domestic duck), and han mari (one bird). Many words begin or end with the same letter in the jizukushi of Japanese comedic stories. This pattern is not widely used in Korean comedic stories, but numerous examples are found in Korean pansori or folk songs. These cases can be divided into two types of repetition: repetition of a sound and repetition of a character. Repetition of a sound can be divided into three patterns by the number of characters: one syllable, two syllables, and three syllables. Another distinguishing characteristic is the position of the character repeated: alliteration expressions and rhythmic formulas. Korean jizukushi are less likely to repeat one character more than three times, whereas Japanese jizukushi might repeat a character more than ten times. An increased variety in the settings of reading is the reason for the development of the method of the repeating the same character in Japanese jizukushi. As well, many individuals now know how to read Chinese characters in Japan. In addition, while the rhyme ceremony was developed in Korean jizukushi, alliteration expression was developed in Japan. This difference likely is due to the Japanese preference for using a successful correlation method. Renga, acrostic, and assup song are examples of the use of this method.
