The perception of the Russo-Japanese war in Russia Choi, Dok-kyu This paper aims to explore the perception of the Russo-Japanese war in Russia from the period of Soviet Russia to the Russian Federation. In order to do this, we need to deal with history textbook through both periods of Russia. Analysis on the points of issues in historical disputes about this war shows that the perception of the Russo-Japanese war in Russia does not change in the meaning of failure of Russian Far Eastern policy, lasted from the mid-19th century, even though methodology and rhetoric were to be assumed an different aspect according to the change of political system. My findings confirm that the durability in the perception, driven through both periods of Russian history has been headed for "the establishment of the great Russia". A comparative study of the perception of the Russo-Japanese war allowed for clarifying such a vital aspect of the Russian history textbook as the interaction between the Stalinism and Patriotism. While the perception of the Tzar's regime in the learned circle of soviet history has a critical point of view, there still remains an aim to advertise the superiority of Soviet Russia. Although anti-soviet description in the resent years has been dominated in the Russian history textbook, it seems that Russian historians find out the patriotism as a new alternative of the ideology to build the great Russia. All this has led us to the conclusion that the perception of "building up the great Russia" is the subject that Russian historians try to overcome at this point of time that we should find out the new paradigm of description in the history textbook for the purpose of the establishment of the peace in the Far East.
