Yoon Hyejoon. 2007. 2. Problems on Progressive Aspect in the Literature Translation from Korean to German. Bilingual Research 33, 141-161. Tense and aspect, the grammatical categories regarding to time, exist both or one of them in a language, according to individual language and region and times even within a language. It is generally known that there is no grammatical progressive aspect in German, while, in Korean, there is the progressive aspect with the forms like ‘-ko itta’, ‘-nun chungita’. Instead of the grammatical progressive aspect, however, for the aspectual meanings German has some periphrastic expressions using adverbs, prepositions, conjunction etc., in addition to simple verbs, and the use of these periphrastic expressions increase more and more even in written languages as well as more frequently in spoken language. The aim of this paper is to observe how the progressive aspect of Korean is translated in German which has no grammatical category for it in the literature texts. In the translation of literature text it is especially important to convey more accurately and faithfully the meaning and feeling of expressions of the source language. The another aim of this paper is to make a suggestion for the better translation for the progressive aspect of Korean on the base of the observed result. First, in the chapter 2, various aspect expressions in Korean are shown and German periphrastic expressions corresponding to them are suggested with the survey of preceding studies. In the chapter 3, the concrete examples of translation from Korean into German for the progressive aspect are observed on the existing translated texts.(Korea University)
