Pauses and sense groups are important elements in reading Hanmun however, despite the existence and importance of pauses, there has been no systemic study. Thus, this paper compiled studies regarding pauses and its roles in Hanmun. Pauses in Hanmun are not overt phenomena but change sentence meanings like sense groups depending on their positions. Because the positions of pauses depend mainly on sentence meaning, they are determined basically by sentence constituents. However, the number of syllables in constituents also affects the positions of pauses. In particular, the number of syllables in objects and complements which are supplementary constituents of connectives combined with connective objects are the criteria to determine pauses. Pauses play four roles: controlling breathingin reading Hanmun, determining sentence meaning, preventing the localization of added postpositional words (APWs), and contributing to rhythmic reading. The roles of pauses as a part of APWscontribute to perfection of sophisticated APWs and maintain the attraction of the original text written in Hanmun. At present, some argue that APWs are useless. Discussion on pauses which are more subtle than APWs can be anachronism. However, APWs are magnificent cultural heritage which Korean people have. The purpose of the discussion in this paper is to contribute to correct Hanmun reading and offer a chance to appreciate the cultural heritage more.
