This study researches on the yongwu (詠物) folk songs composed during the Ming Dynasty by focusing on the folk song book, Guazhi-er (掛枝兒) and Shange (山歌) compiled by Feng Menglong (馮夢龍) in the late Ming Dynasty. Folk songs are intensively included in “Yongbu” (詠部), the 8th volume of Guazhi-er, and yongwusiju (詠物四句), the 6th volume of Shange. The materials of folk songs focused on small objects, food, and natural objects which were easily seen in daily life during the late Ming Dynasty. Also, the materials actively reflected the entertainment culture of the time and the materials demonstrated the writer’s interest in “Niminge (擬民歌)”. Most of the folk song subjects focused on the love and sexual love between man and woman. The subjects also included satire of Shangren (山人) and female entertainers. The above information show the relationship between the writer and folk songs. The critical remarks of Feng Menglong, entertainment materials enjoyed by writers, and common introduction part in yongwu folk songs imply that the writers created yongwu folk songs for entertainments. This study is meaningful as it covers in detail on how the tradition of ‘yongwu’ in Chinese poetry was applied in folk song genre in Ming Dynasty.
