This paper aims to show that in Spanish causative sentences the causative verb ‘hacer’ and the infinitive do not form a complex verb. Guasti(1997) argues that although in Italian causative sentences the causative verb ‘fare’ and the infinitive seem to be morphologically independent words, they form a single unit and that this analysis can also apply to the causative sentences of other Romance languages. Guasti offers the following syntactic evidences. Firstly, in Italian causative sentences the subject of the infinitive can not appear between the causative verb and the infinitive. Secondly, the object clitic of the infinitive should appear before the causative verb. Thirdly, when the causative verb is in the passive form, the direct object of the infinitive can undergo NP-movement to the subject position of the causative verb. Finally, when the infinitive is transitive, its subject receives dative Case, while the infinitive is intransitive its subject receives accusative Case. She argues that all these facts are a consequence of the formation of a complex verb. But we show that each of the four evidences does not apply to Spanish causative constructions. In addition, we present some more independent evidences that Spanish does not allow the causative verb and the infinitive to form a morpho-syntactic unit. Therefore, we conclude that whereas in Italian the causative verb and the infinitive may form a complex verb, in Spanish this does not occur or occurs optionally. In appendix we deal with the question of the obligatory subject clitic climbing in the causative constructions. We point out that many Korean students tend to think incorrectly that the subject clitic appears after the infinitive. We try to offer a pedagogical solution.
