Taking into consideration the fact that a number of major gothic novels were written at the transitional period, and they are characterized by uncertainty and blurring of categories, this article aims to investigate the source of horrors embodied in Dracula, one of the most typical gothic novels born at the transitional period as well as its connection with “in-betweens” which/who resist any clear boundary or definitive category. The in-betweens, cultural and social phenomena at the transitional period, cause so much fear that those who crave epistemological certainty tend to regard them as monsters to be removed or ‘abjected.’ The typical in-betweens presented in Dracula are Dracula whose nature as an in-between is implied in his status as “undead” and so-called “new women” whose aggressive sexuality brings about the reversal of traditional sexual identity. Stoker, however, implies that in-betweens are not abnormal beings/phenomena to be removed and ‘abjected,’ but natural and normal ones to be recognized and accepted, because they are inherent in every human being and human society, just as Dracula who is part of our very selves, even though feared and misinterpreted as an other. Thus, the fear of uncertainty and in-betweens at the transitional period can be manifested and embodied only through/in a gothic novel, a literature of hybridity which consists of various texts/bodies like that of Frankenstein's Monster.
