Keumyongdang Ilseop(1900-1975) was a prominent Buddhist painter in the 20th century and is a historic figure who devoted himself in multiple ways throughout his life to Buddhist services, including Gaekeum(改金), pictures of many colors, sculpture, etc, revived the faltering contemporary Buddhist fine art and left a gigantic footprint in the Korean Buddhist fine art.
After he became a Buddhist monk at Songgwangsa Temple in Jeollanam-do when he was 14 years old, he started Buddhist paintings, and learned painting from Manchong(万聰) and Jeongyeon(定淵), very renowned Buddhist painters, whom he met during his travel to Buddhist temples in Jeolla-do and Chungcheong-do region and other regions across the country while working on dry painting. Particulary, he built the relation of teacher and disciple with Boeung(普應), the Buddhist painter. He painted Buddhist pictures of various themes, and focused on the realistic description based on accurate dessin. He excelled in the description of iridscent clouds expressed with wet lines, beside human face, particularly in using gorgeous colors, which reveals his splendid use of shadow.
Ilseop is considered to have linked the pedigree of Honam Buddhist painting which was represented by Koiyoon(快允) of Seonamsa Buddhist Temple, Euigeom(儀謙) of Songgwangsa Buddhist Temple, etc, as well as Hoseo Buddist painting that originated from Magoksa Buddhist Temple, as he had the relation of teacher and disciple with Keumhodang Yakhyo(錦湖堂若效) and Boeungdang Moonseong(普應堂文性) who pursued vigorous artistic activities mostly in Chuncheong-do region from 19th to 20th century.
