The Illustrations and Explanations of the Wonderful Machines of the Far West, Yuanxi Qiqi tushuo 遠西奇器圖說 (in short, Qiqi tushuo, abbr. QQTS), was published in 1627 by a late Ming Chinese scholar Wang Zheng 王徵 (1571-1644) in cooperation with his close associate Johann Terrenz Schreck (1576-1630), a Swiss Jesuit brother who came to Beijing in 1623. It was the first book that introduced the principles of Western mechanics to China. Its volumes one and two contained a complete set of theoretical premises on the “art of force,” (liyi 力藝) and volume three presented 54 illustrations of machines, each accompanied by text explaining the mechanical principle of each machine. Wang Zheng, who was a Catholic convert (baptismal name: Philippus), took great interest in many imported books brought in by the Jesuit brothers especially in 16th-17th century European mechanical books, and Wang took them as the model books for QQTS. Focusing on the illustrations of the third volume of QQTS, this paper will attempt to trace the mechanical principles and drawing style in the European technical drawing of the 16th-17th centuries. The illustrations of QQTS will be also discussed in relation to the traditional Chinese technical drawings, especially those appearing in the agricultural treatises, since half of the 54 machines deal with the agriculture-related technologies. The relationship of the text and image, as well as the style of the drawing, will be closely examined to define QQTS historically in the development of technical drawing. It will also be discussed from the viewpoint of transmission of Western style drawing in Chinese art history. The ultimate purpose of this paper will be to define the impact of Western science in the formation of scientific ideas in China as expressed in technical drawing.
