The objective of this study is to analyze a changing process of the illustrations in the unit "Cells" of 20 highschool biology textbooks, thus grasping a curricular change in biology education and raising awareness of the illustrations for prospective biology teachers to effectively use the illustrations in the textbooks as a reference to associate them with educational contents in biology. The analysis of the illustrations, in line with a curricular change in biology education, is divided as follows : uses of illustrations, functions of illustrations, need for reference to illustrations, and constructions of illustrations. First, regardless of the curricular change, considering the contents of the unit "Cells" the use of the illustrations which require students to have scientific background knowledge in understanding them has a higher frequency, while the illustrations for motivation emerged in the "4th High School Curriculum(1981)", and those which provide a guide to experiments and a result of the experiments have the lowest frequency. Second, until now the illustrations with "illustrative" functions tend to have a relative high frequency across the curriculums, as apparently it is necessary to graphically explain the names of cell organelle, whereas it was not until the "7th High School Curriculum" that the illustrations with "inquisitive" functions emerged, with a lower frequency. Third, the illustrations of reference have a tendency to increase, helping with connecting the contents of the textbook with them. Finally, the "single illustration" has the highest frequency in the "2009 Revision Curriculum", partly because it is thought to be highly needed for either guiding inquiry or explaining the names of cell organelle. In contrast, the "multi-illustrations", especially "partial enlargement" illustrations, have the lowest frequency due in part to very few concepts in the unit "Cells" which need these illustrations.
