This essay is to review the major trends in the studies of medieval European history for the years of 2017~2018. To classify the sixty-one works published for the two years in regional terms, a considerable imbalance comes to the front. For instance, whereas studies of medieval France dominated the scholarship with 24 articles, only one research treated British history. With regard to the periods covered in the works, a similar disparity shows itself. In contrast to the studies concerning the early and high Middle Ages, which remained in a stagnated phase, the period from 1300 to 1600 won exceptional popularity.
A number of notable trends appeared. Inquiries into literal and visual texts made great progress. A number of studies shed a light on the political and social contexts as well as varying purposes of the commemorating acts of past events. The 500th anniversary of the Reformation saw the publication of many works with diverse themes and perspectives related to the religious revolution. Some interesting researches dealing with such topics as medieval science and medicine, cooking and chefs of Renaissance Italy, death and funeral rites, and, above all, the daily life of anonymous people surely extended the horizon of our knowledge on medieval Europe.
