The purpose of this study is to examine Tolstoy’s inner discordance or dissonance in relation to sexuality and art, based on the formal similarity between his The Kreutzer Sonata and Beethoven’s work of the same name. In general, in his writings, Tolstoy uses music as a medium that reveals the origin of existence or as a motif that evokes physical desire. However, in The Kreutzer Sonata, music plays an important role in forming the overall contradistinctive narrative structure, and also amplifies the conflict and confrontation between pre- and post-conversion Tolstoy. That is, in accordance with the structure of the sonata, whose sections are comprised of exposition, development, and recapitulation, in The Kreutzer Sonata, the conflict over theories of sexuality and art between the old and the young generation and that between Pozdnyshev and his wife gradually expand into Pozdnyshev’s inner discordance or dissonance. This narrative structure, which is replete with tension, can be seen as the embodiment of the collision between the pre-conversion Tolstoy, who emphasized aesthetics and autonomy, and the post-conversion Tolstoy, who pursued art as a means to an end and asceticism. As a result, I believe this approach to The Kreutzer Sonata can illuminate his inner conflict or dissonance in this regard.
