In this study, we examine various functions of Russian cognitive verbs “znat’” and “ponimat’” in the Russian spoken language through conversation analysis and context analysis. Cognitive verbs are the type of verbs that include the meanings of accepting, understanding, and judging information about an object. However, in the dialogic discourse, “znaesh’”(second person singular, present tense of “znat’”), “znaete”(second person plural, present tense of “znat’”), “ponimaesh’”((second person singular, present tense of “ponimat’”) and “ponimaete”(second person plural, present tense of “ponimat’”) are used as various discourse pragmatical markers depending on situations, its position in the sentence. The pragmatical discourse functions of the cognitive verbs “znat’” and “ponimat’” are newly acquired in the process of the desemanticization through grammaticalization. The main functions of Russian cognitive verbs in the colloquial dialogue are the function of topicalization marker and discourse markers. The topicalization marker is used in the introduction of a topic and is used to signal the beginning or to attempt to switch between topics, and cognitive verbs as discourse markers perform the function of a correction marker for mistakes when there is a need for the speaker to supplement the insufficiency of information in their utterance in the process of dialogue. And the cognitive verbs have a function of hesitation filler that is used to take time to recall some forgotten words. Finally, it is analyzed that the cognitive verbs at the end of sentence perform the function of the mitigation markers as speaker's politeness strategy. In the last chapter we schematize the characteristics in the preceding and following utterances, based on the discourse pragmatical functions of cognitive verbs. It can be a useful resource for Korean Russian learners to provide practical help in conversation and translation.
