This paper has a purpose to show Lawrence’s revolutionary try toward creating cracks and fissures in concentional metaphors and opening a “window to the sun.” His “Fruits” poems in Birds, Beasts and Flowers are an attempt to pork holes in-to open-the mechanistic paradigm, revealing that the paradigm itself is only a metaphor, not literal truth. Metaphors of openness and inclusiveness are remarkable in his poems. The Holy Ghost is the wedge that pries open the closed system of mechanism, thus opening these doors of receptivity. As such, it is a metaphor for Lawrence’s conceptual schema of inclusiveness, his epistemology of “knowing togetherness.” The underworld in Lawrence’s poems comprises entailments of separation and wholeness, death and birth, sexuality and completion: the underworld is both womb and tomb. The darkness of the underworld is never treated as the whole of life: the seeds push up from the ground; sunset yields to sunrise. Because Western culture has privileged the “light” side of the flux over the “dark,” darkness is the unknown, the fittest subject for exploration. To privilege the dark is as mechanistic as to privilege the light.
