The rapid changes in the political situation around the Korean Peninsula since 2018 and the consequent possibility of a new inter-Korean relationship and the realignment of US-North Korea relations are dampening the space for a unified debate, expanding the landscape of peace discourse in our society. As a result, we are putting considerable challenges on our unification education as well as our North Korea policy and unification policy so far. Under these circumstances, it is necessary to reflect on the significance of the recent peace discourse in our society in relation to unification between the two Koreas in order to answer such questions as what is the meaning of unification and the direction and task of unification policy and education in the future. Amid the dynamic trend of the situation on the Korean Peninsula, the values of peace and the party of unification are reviewed in the context of interaction, and further fundamental concerns are asked about unification policy and unification education that can overcome the division system and prepare for an era of peace on the Korean Peninsula. In this context, this article aims to redefine the direction of unification education that fully reflects the value of peace and to redesign and present the contents and tasks of unification education required for the formation of a peaceful unification community based on it.
