Amid the ever-intensifying evidence of the global climate crisis, several decades have passed since the public and private sectors around the world started to incorporate various regulations and policies related to buildings to mitigate their negative impact to the environment. Among those, many high-income, industrialized cities have been legislating energy benchmarking and disclosure policies to understand their building"s energy use dynamics better. New York and Chicago, the two subject cities of this research, are among the early adopters of this policy and have accumulated data since 2009 and 2013, respectively, for buildings over 50,000 ft²(4,645m²). In this paper, we analyze benchmarking data for large-scale office buildings over 500,000ft²(46,452m²) gross floor area covering the 2014-2017 period with a focus on the differences between the primary energy used and its relation to the overall energy use intensity(EUI). Chicago, despite the longer heating degree days (HDD) during the period, used approx. 15% less energy, which our analysis indicates, may relate to the difference in the primary energy source used. We performed multiple variate regression tests to measure the impact of each building"s energy source and characteristics on the Energy Use Intensity (EUI), and our results show the least EUI for buildings with a higher source site ratio in both cities.
