This paper aims at examining when, why and how flatland wall(城郭) in the royal city of Goguryeo was constructed.
The first flatland wall in the royal city of Goguryeo was “flatland wall of Jian(集安)”. There are disagreements about the construction period, such as the 3rd century theory, and the 4th century. The former judged the record of Pyongyang(平壤城) in 247, and the latter judged the record of Gungnae(國內城) in 342 as the construction record of the flatland wall of Jian. As a result of the examination, it was found that the former had the weakness that the relics of the 3rd century were not excavated from the wall, and the latter had the difficulty of interpreting Pyongyang in 247. However, considering the background and purpose of the construction of the two walls in the records, the former is more convincing. The flatland wall of Jian was more important to function as hierarchical division of space between power and non-power than as military defense.
At that time, the flatland wall of royal cities of Cao Wei(曹魏) also did not include the residence district of ordinary people. Only the royal chambers, government offices, and residence districts of high-ranking officials and soldiers were included. This was a spatial distinction between power and non-power. In 237, when Cao Wei was in the middle of Luoyang’s construction, an envoy of Goguryeo visited royal city of Cao Wei. This paper inferred that the experience at this time was reflected in the construction of flatland wall of Jian in 247.
