The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between self-esteem, the hyper competitive attitude, and the quest for perfectionism in early childhood pre-service teachers. The questionnaires about self-esteem, hyper competitive attitude, and perfectionism tendencies were carried out on 253 pre-school children in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades attending 3-year school education. Using descriptive statistics, self-esteem, hyper competitive attitudes and perceived perfectionism were calculated. Multiple correlations were used to examine Pearson’s correlation coefficient and self-esteem. The main research results are as follows. First, all of the sub items of self-esteem and self-esteem showed a positive correlation with self-directed perfectionism. Second, the sub-item of self-esteem, the objective life, showed a positive correlation with perfectionism. Third, self-esteem affects self-directed perfectionism in the order of the sub-items: objective life and the conscious life. The discussion based on the results is summarized in three ways. First, a question mark for existing myths that emphasize the positive effects of self-esteem is needed. Second, it is necessary to reflect on the self-esteem improvement programs of early childhood teachers including those in early childhood education. Third, it is necessary to review the paradigm of self-esteem, whether it is pertaining to individual competence or social capacity.
