The purpose of this paper is to survey and examine how English and Korean idioms are acquired and understood by students who take English grammar-related subjects in general English at J University in small and medium cities in Korea. In order to acquire and understand English and Korean idioms, the premise is that one must first understand culture and know a plethora of vocabulary about the language. Even if you know a lot of vocabulary, it is necessary to understand and acquire the idiom because it is not a perfect communication without knowing an idiom that is used in a proper context. The survey suggests that if you could understand the culture, it would be easier to understand and learn through the rest of the vocabulary, pronunciation, experience, and analogy. The understanding and acquisition of idioms responded absolutely with context and vocabulary. In this paper, six idioms related to hand and face in English and Korean are dealt with, respectively. However, this paper is limited to idioms related to hand and face because it is more suitable to understand and analyze the idioms and to use them in appropriate situations.
