The aim of this study is to investigate a possible way of utilizing augmented reality for signage in multi-purpose commercial complexes. The concept of a multi-purpose commercial complex has been aroused to reinforce the customer experience in commercial environments. Despite the rapid growth of the urban solution, the mixed-use space has a significant problem in wayfinding. However, in terms of wayfinding, it has been studied solely by adopting spatial analysis. In order to solve this problem, this paper looks into a way of utilizing state-of-art technology – augmented reality (AR) – into a sign system of a multi-purpose commercial complex. AR is a way to connect the space and customers on a deeper level by enhancing engagement and providing a more personalized experience beyond the physical limitations. Thus, this research figures out the influence of AR on wayfinding experience, especially focusing on the response time to direction decision-making and cognitive appraisal during the experience. Departing from an experiment to compare decision-making time through traditional signage with AR-enhanced signage, a questionnaire was asked to find out the factors that influenced this result. The result of this study demonstrates that, in terms of directional signage, AR shows a great possibility to improve wayfinding. Especially, it turns out that there is a positive correlation between the degree of difficulty in finding directions and the effectiveness of AR signage. In addition, this study figures out that cognitive appraisals differ from the effectiveness. Even though the participants responded that textual signage is the clearest, graphic signage is the most effective type to reduce response time and to enhance aesthetic impression in AR environments. Therefore, this research finally suggests AR-enhanced signage using graphic elements combined with text to improve both legibility and aesthetics.
