Since its genesis, universality has been the foundation upon which the social sciences have gained popularity. Upon closer examination of contextual variances, such as colonialism and nationalism, however, universality loses its stronghold. A detailed study of post-colonial Korean social sciences shows that the universal theories of the twentieth century may in fact be "universal" theories, only within the perimeters of the West. This paper discusses the structure and the theoretical limitations of the modernization theory of the 1960-70s together with the progressive theories of the 1980s presented as the counterpart from the analytic framework of universal/particular and of time/space.
While Korean social scientists generally espoused Western theories since liberation in 1945, Western-derived models have been unable to sufficiently explain Korean society. Clashes with colonization, civil war, and military dictatorships have further obscured the boundaries between politics and scholarship. Nevertheless, progress has been made inasmuch as Korean scholars have come to the realization that in order to indigenize the social sciences, notions such as universal/particular and time/space, must be seriously taken into account. Eventually the indigenization of Western theory and the globalization of indigenous studies would bring about the realization of a pluralistic universalism.
