Tonghak scriptures and oral tradition attribute great spiritual significance to a talismanic diagram known as the y?ngbu. This mystical talisman figured prominently in the formative religious experience of the Tonghak founder, Ch'oe Che-u, and in the ritual practice of his early followers. However, it soon fell into disuse: in present-day Ch'?ndogyo/Tonghak ritual practice the y?ngbu has no place, and no memory even survives of what it looked like. In this article it is shown that the seemingly lost information about the form of the y?ngbu can be gleaned from certain surviving documents. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that knowledge of what the talisman looked like incidentally illuminates some otherwise obscure aspects of early Tonghak teaching.
