Objective: This study examines user needs for mobile health (mHealth) applications based on text-mining of user reviews. Background: With the interest in well-being and the spread of smart devices such as smartphones and wearable devices, the number of users who want to manage and promote their health on mHealth apps is steadily increasing. It is important to understand user needs for inducing users to long-term use and healthy behavior changes as the primary success goal of the mHealth apps. Method: This study collects user reviews of the mHealth apps, especially fitness and weight-loss apps, from Google Play Store in South Korea and classifies the reviews into positive and negative reviews according to its rating. Then, we conduct the LDA topic modeling and the word co-occurrence network analysis to explore user needs. Results: Users tend to positively evaluate informative contents related to the exercise and diet, convenient recording, intuitive self-monitoring, and accuracy of automatic activity tracking such as the amounts of caloric intake and steps. However, they tend to negatively evaluate errors about connectivity with wearable devices, inaccuracy of activity tracking, and automatic subscription payments. Conclusion: mHealth app developer and designer should consider user-centric UXs and resolve technical issues to help users achieve their goals and induce long-term use of the apps. Application: This study has several implications to suggest practical design guidelines for the success of mHealth apps.
