The study of Buddhist history during the Joseon Dynasty has been a study of the Ch’ŏnghŏ Hyuchŏng(淸虛休靜) and Sa-myung Yujeong(四溟 惟政), and their participation and activities in the Imjin War were symbolized by the Buddhism Buddhism. Moreover, the Buddhist army’s “Loyalty(忠義)” was interpreted only from the viewpoint of Confucianism, so the Buddhist meaning and identity were not identified. This is because the monks’ abandonment of their monarchs and parents left the country and society out of order, and Sa-myung Yujeong’s performance seemed very unusual.
Sa-myung participated in the war, but it was not a longevity blinded by resonance. a historiographer and Confucian even ignored him because he was involved in world affairs. However, the recognition and reward of the four graces(四恩) were also an important role for the monks. In particular, loyalty to the monarch and the country and filial piety to the parents were indispensable. ‘loyalty’ is basically interpreted as true heart, Center of mind, and Qualitative. It is a virtue of practicing humanity as a subject of personal ethical practice before it is a unilateral virtue of the monarchs and servants. Even Confucians interpreted Sa-myung of loyalty as a practice spirit of Buddhism. The sound and image are opposed to the truth, but they fuse with each other and maintain complementary relationships. He interpreted Confucianism’s strict morality as a natural one that does not enforce it. In the end, the loyalty emphasized by Sa-myung was based on the Daharmadhatu Pratityasamutpada(法界緣起), which believes that all beings in the world of phenomena are true.
