This study investigated the role of less familiar scripts in phoneme categorization and lexical encoding of L2 learners. Using a word-learning paradigm, native English learners of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) learned MSA non-words with confusable phoneme pairs for two days, and on the third day, their phoneme categorization and lexical encoding abilities were examined in the AX discrimination and lexical decision tasks, respectively. In the learning stage, one group of learners was presented with the MSA spellings, while the other group received auditory input only. The results demonstrate that exposure to orthographic information during learning did not appear to have a significant influence on lexical encoding or phoneme discrimination. These results together with some previous studies suggest that when learners are exposed to a foreign language with less familiar scripts, the orthographic effects may be null or weak at the early stage of learning.
