Korean literature is now increasingly translated into other languages, some of which indirectly. Indirect translation has been negatively viewed with relatively little research, despite its widespread practice and implications ranging from the decision to translate into a language, to shifts in translations, and to domestic republication. In this regard, this paper examines the influence of indirect translation and mediating texts in terms of impact on the number of languages to be translated into, translation shifts in final target texts, and influence on domestic republication of the source text. This paper calls for a broadened view of indirect translation, discussing the relationship between the source text, mediating text and final translation with regard to central and peripheral languages. Finally, ways to tackle the potential problems of indirect translation are discussed.
