This study was conducted to analyze which salient identity the varsity athletes chosen by themselves among the elite athlete and student athlete, and how this salient hierarchy of the identity was possible. For this purpose, the authors surveyed 92 varsity athletes with open-ended questionnaire and performed in-depth interviews with eight varsity athletes. As a result, we found that 66(71.7%) varsity athletes said that they were identified as ‘elite athletes’ by themselves, and there were three main contexts in which a varsity athlete formed the identity as an elite athlete. First, the varsity athletes distinguished themselves from normal student with the ‘representativeness mentality’ which has been paradigmatic in the context of school milieu. Second, the routed system worked as a mechanism to provide familiarity and stability to the varsity athlete, leading them to define themselves as an elite athlete. Third, most varsity athletes were kindly marginalized by the ‘separating mechanism’ which was created by the micro structure called ‘an island in the classroom.’ In this context, most varsity athletes defined their identity as elite athletes, keeping away the ‘student athlete identity’ which national policies on school varsity institutions have hoped for normalizing.
