This study delves into political support for progressive parties by examining political attitudes of Korean voters. In spite of reforms of electoral systems, progressive parties in South Korea frequently face electoral difficulties in political competition. By analyzing the accumulated data of Korean General Social Survey (2003-2018), we reveal that there is no ideological differences between individuals who support progressive parties and Democratic parties in South Korea. Likewise, the lack of difference is also found in political attitudes in several issues. Moreover, they have similar patterns of vote choices in elections. Data from the 21st Korean General Election in 2020 also show the same patterns of empirical evidence. Thus, we argue that progressive parties in South Korea have very weak individual-level support. And we suggest that the parties should pursue ideological purity and issue ownership, which are more important than institutional reforms, in order to establish individual-level political foundation.
