Multiple animal and clinical studies repeatedly documented that the performance of regular exercise indicated the physical and menenatl health improvement effects, but the studies analyzing the effects of exercise program by liberal physical education are yet scarce. For this reason, this study tried to analyze the effects of combined exercise program by liberal physical education on the body composition, physical fitness factors and several metabolic markers measured by blood testing of female college students. A total of 47 female college students(mean age: 19.5±0.9 years) were recruited in this study, and they were divided into control group(n=19; mean age: 19.2±0.6 years) and experimental groups(n=28; mean age: 19.7±1.1 years). In the case of experimental group, they regularly performed the combined exercise program by liberal physical education for 90 min a day twice a week during a total of 12 weeks, but control group were not registered in this liberal physical education. The body composition(height, weight, body mass index(BMI), fat-free mass, muscle mass, skeletal muscle mass, fat mass, percentage of body fat, basal metabolic rate(BMR)), physical fitness factors(right and left grip, back strength, sit-and-reach, right and left shoulder flexibility, right and left balance, cardiopulmanary endurance(maximum oxygen consumption, VO₂max)) and metabolic markers(iron, glucose and lipid metabolism associated markers and total homocysteine(tHcy) concentration) of all subjects were measured at the baseline and after the intervention, respectively. In the case of body composition and metabolic markers, there were no significant improvement between two groups by the intervention. However, there were ths significant improvement effects in the several physical fitness factors such as left grip, back strength, right and left shoulder flexibility, right and left balance and cardiopulmanary endurance after the intervention in experimental group(p<.05). Thus, the combined exercise program by liberal physical education may be the useful tool in the improvement of various physical fitness factors in the case of female college students.
