There have been remarkable attemtps to show the compatibility of Hegel’s concept of dialectical development with the contemporary, Darwinian evolutionay theory. The fundamental difficulty in upholding this pro-evolutionary interpretation of Hegel is his overt rejection of the evolutionary theories of his time. Yet, Hegel develops his thought about biological species, supposing that the philosophy of nature differs from natural sciences. The important issue would then be why species must be understood natural-philosophically and how this is possible, rather than whether Hegel is evolutionist or not. While making it clear that Hegel holds an anti-evolutionary position, this paper reconstructs his natural-philosophical thought about species through an analysis of the last chapter of the “Philosophy of Nature” in Hegel’s 1830 Encyclopedia on the “Genus-process.” It further considers the role that the “Genus-process” plays for the transition from nature to spirit in the Encyclopedia system and its meaning with respect to the relationship between nature and spirit.
