Agriculture is a hazardous occupation in industrialized countries, and there is lack of data on work-related injuries among farmers in South Korea. This study examined the insurance status and accidents befalling farmers using the enrollment and claim data from the farmers’ safety insurance at NongHyup Life Insurance. A total of 3,882,385 farmers were enrolled and there were 141,246 claims from January 1st, 2015 to December 31st, 2019. The accident type and body region of injury were analyzed using the KCD-7 code. The results showed that there is an increase in the number of insured farmers every year, with a higher percentage of insured males compared to females. The rate of accidents among farmers was found to be rising every year, and more accidents were seen in the elderly. According to the KCD-7 code, the cause of the accident showed a high proportion of ‘20. External causes of morbidity and mortality(V01-Y98)’, and the result of the accident was a high proportion of ‘19. Injury, poisoning, and certain other consequences of external causes(S00-T98)’., Major injuries were caused by falling, slipping, and machine exposure. Finally, the abdomen, lower back, lumbar pine, and pelvis were the most frequently injured areas, and the number of wrist and hand injury cases were found to be increasing every year. The results of this study provided a rational basis for planning an agricultural injury prevention policy.
