In a beautiful island of Taiwan, the gospel was preached earlier and blossomed. Pastor Georgius Candidius(甘治士, 1597~1647) of the Dutch Reform Church, the first missionary in Taiwan, arrived at the island on May 4, 1627. On June 26, 1858, Western powers including Britain, France, the United States, and Russia, signed the Tianjin Treaty with China, which resulted in Taiwan"s designation of Jilong, Huwei(滬尾), Anping, Dagou(打狗, present-day Kaohsiung 高雄) as open ports. In these cities, the freedom of missionary work was guaranteed. The mission work in Taiwan began in the southern regions of already-developed Kaohsiung and Tainan, and gradually expanded to the eastern and northern regions. Taiwan suffered a lot from Japan"s colonial rule through the Treaty of Shimonoseki in April 1895, but continued to grow and gradually marched toward independence. After the transition to socialism of China in 1949, missionaries who had left China took up the ministry again in Taiwan and grew significantly under the government of Chinese Nationalist Party. Unfortunately, however, the Christianity in Taiwan has been stagnant since the mid1960s and has even regressed in some areas. Nevertheless, it is dreaming of a renaissance.
