This study explored the relationship between changes in children’s everyday life and their emotional conditions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and identified the environments in which children would experience greater deprivation in daily life and be exposed to domestic violence and child abuse. For this purpose, the study utilized the data from the Children and Youth Awareness Survey for the COVID-19 of ChildFund Korea. It categorized the amount of primary time usage before and after the COVID-19 into three groups (recommended level, insufficient level, and excessive level) based on the globally recommended children’s living standards, developed from the perspective of child development and child rights. Then, it analyzed the differences among the groups.
The results revealed that the changes and deprivation of children’s daily life became more serious after the COVID-19. The gap in children’s living standards between different socioeconomic levels widened following the onset of the COVID-19. Children in families with a single source of income or marital conflicts were at higher risk of being exposed to child abuse.
Based on the results, the following policy implications were suggested: raising awareness of the importance of balance in children’s daily life and aiming to restore that balance; the need for family-friendly labor policies that support parents in caring for children regardless of their working conditions; provision of detailed childcare policies to reduce the care gap for the vulnerable groups; the reinforcement of face-to-face monitoring and visiting services to prevent child abuse; and the consolidation of organizations in charge of domestic violence and child abuse.
