Examined in this article is the aftermath of multiple volcanic eruptions that hit the Korean peninsula around 536 and 540, which we could also refer to as the “Volcanic activities since the year 536,” which resulted in a considerable drop in temperature and subsequent cooling of the peninsula. If we examine cases of Korea, China and Japan, we can deduce a factual probability that the climate surrounding the Korean peninsula would have been growing colder and drier in the 530s and ‘40s. Written records also say that from around the year 536 the summers were atypically cool, dry weather was producing yellow dust, and famines became wider and more consecutive. Of course, records of the Korean peninsula’s overall climate in the past are not without some problems, but as long as similar phenomena are reported in Chinese and Japanese records, we can say that the volcanic activities of 536 did have an impact on the Korean peninsula as well.
The temperature drop and climate cooling caused by the volcanic activities of 536 led to decreased agricultural production and widespread famine on the Korean peninsula. The aftermath of a disturbed climate continued into the 550s, and essentially neutralized the authorities’ planned countermeasures against this natural disaster. As prolonged famine and accompanying pandemic put a strain on the internal communities, population turned into refugees also in the Chinese Northern and Southern dynasties, while Northern nomadic tribes including the Turks went through several relocations which led to the formation of dominant states. And in Goguryeo, political conflicts resulted in large scale massacres amongst members of the aristocratic circle. In that regard, one may say that the ‘volcanic activities since 536’ was what instigated the shuffling of status-quo throughout the mid-6th century Northeast Asia.
