This study aims to investigate how to justify rights of people with mental illness, to verify factors of predicting right-oriented justification and result-based justification, and to propose strategies to respect rights of people with mental illness. In order to achieve the purposes, recovery cases of schizophrenia and lasting cases of schizophrenia for 389 adults were presented, and each justification level for the status of employment, housing, and qualification discrimination was investigated. In addition, factors of predicting the right-oriented justification and result-based justification of mentally challenged people using the decision tree analysis were analyzed. The results showed that the right-oriented justification in the qualification status was lower than that in the employment status and housing status. On the other hand, the result-based justification in the qualification status was higher than that in the employment status and housing status. Those with the highest proportion to be included in the upper group of the right-oriented justification for the people with mental illness were people with a bachelor’s degree or higher, males, or people living in large cities. On the other hand, the high proportion to be included in the upper group of the result-based justification was when the monthly average household income was low, the age was high, and the degree condition was a bachelor’s degree or higher. These results enabled the public to understand the logic of justification for the right respect and infringement of people with mental illness, and to present practical and policy alternatives for the change in public perception.
