Purpose: Efforts to improve students" physical activity are administered by physical education teachers, but due to poor school environments, the results of these efforts are not as satisfactory as expected. In recent studies, a wide range of socio-ecological approaches have been recommended to promote physical activity and address obesity. Accordingly, there is a need to expand the role of physical education teachers from the traditional point of view to a socio-ecological perspective that is linked to schools and local communities. Method: In line with the periodical demands for physical education teachers, a state-of-the-art review was conducted to examine the expanded role of physical education teachers. Results: The results derived from the literature analysis are three-fold: 1) restructuring of school-based physical activity programs throughout the school, 2) communicating with parents about the importance of health and physical activity and encouraging healthy habits at home, 3) cultivating an active lifestyle and culture through proactive participation in physical activity. Conclusion: It is considered to be of paramount importance for physical education teachers to seek continuing partnerships with the school and the community in order to promote students" physical activity.
