This study examines the contents of Japanese language education in the only women"s magazine published in Joseon in the 1910s, "Uriui Kadyung" from the perspective of "family improvement." In "Uriui Kadyung" Japanese education was presented as the main contents of "The Study of the Family" and was treated as "common knowledge" for the companionship between Joseon and Japanese wives. "Uriui Kadyung" encouraged Joseon women to improve their families by educating the less educated or ignorant Joseon female population who lost opportunities for education, and to interact with Japanese by learning Japanese language. It presented daily expressions to Joseon wives regarding Japanese culture and tradition. It is in line with the purpose of the magazine"s publication to define the role of women as well-prepared housewives and to convey knowledge about Japan"s "home science."
The contents of Japanese language education, along with the changes in women"s lifestyles, were intended to enlighten the "uneducated Joseon women," which was indicated in their original motivations, and to cover topics that meet the purpose of educating women and improving their families. It was also composed of contents related to the contents of articles in "Uriui Kadyung," which was launched with the aim of educating women in earnest in the field of "home economics" in Japan. It was confirmed that this was to convey "ordinary knowledge" related to "Family norms, family hygiene, and family economics", while at the same time securing women"s roles as wives, mothers, and daughters-in-law.
