Why is there anything rather than nothing? This question is one of the most fundamental problems of metaphysics, now approached by science, especially cosmology, but still regarded as ultimate so that its solution cannot be found in science (only). Contemporary cosmology finds herself channeged by theologians and philosophers of religion whose concern is to renew the classical cosmological argument to prove the existence of God. A. Grünbaum criticizes the challenge as well as the problem itself: he calls it “Primordial Existential Question (PEQ)” and qualifies a pseudo-problem. To him theological attempts leading from the PEQ to the cosmological analysis and looks into the history of philosophy: he refers to Leibnizian original version of PEQ in Principle of Grace and Nature and Bergson’s critique on it. This paper will first introduce the PEQ, then review Grünbaum’s analysis and his references to Leibniz and Bergson. Next, I present an alternative reading of PEQ based on Leibniz’s 1696 text “Ultimate Origin of Things” and Bergson’s lecture notes on it, then I turn to the “ideal genesis of matter” as discussed in Bergson’s Creative Evolution. This will show that the PEQ is not, as Grünbaum puts it, a “pseudo-problem,” but rather a “veritable problem” which would not simply go away with its effectiveness and productivity.
