This paper analyzes the exhibition Everyday Life, Memory and History: Korean Art and Visual Culture after 1945, which was planned as a special exhibition for the 2nd Gwangju Biennale in 1997. This exhibition examined the flow of political and social changes in Korea since 1945 through visual culture, including art and design. This show imparts a variety of messages on its audience. It is a response to events from the 1990s, such as the so-called “(visual) cultural turn,” and is remembered as a symbolic event of a “curatorial turn” concerned about putting exhibitions together in the 1990s. This paper examines what background the exhibition was established upon, what it ultimately asks for, and what effect it has produced. For the development of the discussion, I will look at the situation surrounding the Korean contemporary art and design scene in the 1990s, and examine the experience of modernity formed by the state and individuals through visual culture in order to analyze the conceptual layer constructed through the exhibition. I also want to consider the concept of kitschification that is emphasized through this exhibition. By doing this, I will delve into the meaning of exhibition culture, which was an axis of Korean visual culture in the 1990s, and the meaning of putting together exhibitions and exhibitions as a medium.
